Pocono Toy Drive Goes Well

Pocono Toy Drive Goes Well - Monday, December 15, 2008 at 3:54PM EST

EAST STROUDSBURG - Santa and the elves are busy filling those wish list requests and so are the holiday helpers at the Salvation Army in East Stroudsburg.

They were surprised at the outpouring of help from the community this year. Eyewitness News talked with one volunteer who explained why it's so important to help.

For Salvation Army volunteer Rose Halstead, Christmas present is much more festive than Christmas past.

She helped with the annual toy drive to say thank you. Many years ago, Rose turned to the Salvation Army for help. Her husband was hurt and couldn't work. She could barely afford food, let alone toys."It takes your heart out because you have these children and you know they expect something under the tree," she said.

The Salvation Army gave gifts to all four of her kids and their Christmas morning smiles were a gift for her. She said, "[It's] something you can't explain. If you're a mother you know what it means to see that your children have - it's really a blessing."

Salvation Army staff and volunteers have spent weeks collecting, sorting and packing toys. Rose said,"It's just wonderful to know that I can help in the community and that some children will have a merrier Christmas."

Some volunteers were worried the economy might cause a drop in donations this year but they were pleasantly surprised. "We have been very very blessed even though are economy is very very slow," said Salvation Army Christmas coordinator Jill Brink.

The group collected enough gifts to help about 750 families. They spent countless hours on the Christmas project. Hours they say are will worth it to bring joy to children.

"I just like making sure everybody around Christmas is as happy as I am," said volunteer Amy Willaims.

The Salvation Army will give those toys out next Monday.
If you're in need you can apply for help at the East Stroudsburg office next Monday afternoon from two through five.
