Pocono Wildlife Rehab Center Needs Help - Friday, July 31, 2009 at 1:59PM EST

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY - A storm ruffled lots of feathers Wednesday. Kathy Uhler is the director of the Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center. She recalled, "It was like a normal thunder storm and then all of a sudden the wind just went -- whoosh."

Raging winds scared the bobcat. Owls cowered as Mother Nature ripped the roof off their cage. Turtles huddled in their shells. Uhler said, "Wild animals don't like the disturbance."

She tries to keep things calm at the center where she helps injured and orphaned wild animals. The storm forced the place to close for two days. She said, "This is the longest time we've been closed in almost thirty years."

Uhler said everything happened in a flash. She watched in shock as the wind grabbed her duck cage. She said, "This little duck pen went tumbling and the little duckies that are inside there are still too young to fly - and they tumbled along with it. There's no floor in it. They just ran along with their cage."

The ducks survived. Kathy said no animals in her care were hurt. However, a lot of the property was damaged. Nearly a dozen trees fell. one hit the center's vehicle.

Over the past two days dozens of volunteers cleaned up the mess. The center still has a lot of work, and shopping, to do. The tornado knocked out power for days. Kathy only had enough generators to keep the most important animal food. She explained, "Frozen rats and mice that we feed our birds of prey because we can't just go to the corner store and get those."

The center will have to buy more food and supplies but Kathy isn't sure how they'll pay for it all.

The Pocono Pub is holding a fund raiser for the center this weekend. Details are listed below.
