POCONO TOWNSHIP - Ski resorts in the Poconos started to pack away winter gear Monday, wrapping up one of the best winter seasons in years.

"To step back and say it was an exceptional year is really a true statement," said Carl Wilgus the Executive Director of the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau.

Camelback Mountain Resort in Pocono Township was open for 120 days this season. That's one of the longest winter ski seasons on record.

Craig Low works in Marketing for Camelback. He said, "If Mother Nature was a real person I'd say thank you very much."

Thanks to come early snow and cold weather Camelback Mountain Resort opened the second week of December and stayed open through last weekend.

"A ski area is really nothing but a snow farm and if you don't have a product, you don't have a crop, you don't have snow, it's really hard to sell and promote your product," said Wilgus.

He added that something else also helped - high gas prices. Because many people chose to drive the short distance from New York or Philadelphia rather than to other, more distant ski towns.

"If anybody is going to be resilient in a tougher economy and do well, we're probably better positioned than anyone else," he explained.

And Wilgus expects to maintain that good position throughout the rest of the year. He said, "We started off, we're in good shape so we're really ahead of the curve before the spring, summer and fall season sets up."
