SPRINGBROOK TWP., LACKAWANNA COUNTY- A fireworks stand gets busted two days before the big holiday. State police say the people who run it were selling illegal fireworks.
State police took away boxes and questioned workers at Weidow's Pallets company on Aston Mountain Road in Springbrook Township. Troopers say illegal fireworks were sold there.
Pennsylvania State Trooper Bill Satkowski said, "Whenever you see anyone selling anything unlicensed, you don't know where those particular items are going to end up. Is a child going to have those and severely injure themselves? So that's a priority to the state police."
75 packages worth about $12,000 were taken from this business. The state Department of Agriculture issues licenses to sell certain fireworks. Troopers say this business didn't have one.
This building and these trucks on neighboring property were searched. Charges for the business owner are pending.
The evidence found at Weidow’s Pallets will be forwarded on to the Lackawanna County District Attorney.
Troopers say finding an illegal fireworks stand isn't easy. Neighborhood complaints led to this sting. "We know that they're out there. Unfortunately we need the complaint to come in for us to pinpoint exactly where they are," said Satkowski.
The business is allowed to sell what legal fireworks remain. The fireworks taken will likely result in minor charges. They were consumer fireworks, not display fireworks used in large city fireworks shows. | |
