Police Investigating Stabbing, Shooting in Wilkes-Barre - Friday, August 7, 2009 at 11:30PM EST

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- Wilkes-Barre police had their hands full Friday night. First a stabbing around 8:30. And just 30 minutes later, a man was shot.

Eyewitness News was were there as medics tended to the victim. We're told he was shot once in the hip. He was transported to Geisinger Wyoming Valley.

As for details, we're told a group of men was walking along Academy Street, just down from South Main. Neighbors said there was a flash and a loud bang. Some thought it was a fire cracker.

But they then found a man lying on the ground with a gunshot wound. 9-1-1 radio reports indicated a group of three black males was seen fleeing the scene. At least one of them was armed with a gun in his waistband.

And a half hour earlier, police were on the scene of a stabbing. We're told a man was stabbed in the arm by his girlfriend. This happened on North Pennsylvania Avenue around 9:00.

Police said the lady involved walked away from the scene. The victim in this is expected to be okay. He was seen sitting up and talking in the back of an ambulance before being taken to the hospital.

Again, police at this point investigating a shooting and a stabbing, and there's no word if anyone is in custody.
