PALMERTON, CARBON COUNTY - Police say 34 year old Leslie Setzer of East Stroudsburg raped and tried to kill a 91 year old woman in Carbon County.
People who live along Columbia Avenue in Palmerton said they used to trust people. Marjorie Federanich said, "Palmerton's a nice little community."
But they're not so trusting anymore. Police say on Saturday the elderly woman allowed Leslie Setzer into her house. He had asked to use her phone. Federanich said, "She's such a sweet person."
Court documents show Setzer chatted with the victim and even told her his mother's name. Then he attacked her. Police say he beat her, raped her, and sodomized her in two different parts of her home. Steve Hansut lives nearby. He said,"He abused a woman that's 91 years old - raped her - where's his brains? He doesn't have any he doesn't belong in our society."
The woman also told police Setzer tried to suffocate her with a plastic pillow covering. Federanich said, "I just wonder what this world is coming to when these types of things are happening."
According to arrest papers while police were interviewing the victim at the hospital, the suspected rapist showed up and told nurses he needed help. When officers arrested Setzer he allegedly said, I'm sorry. God bless the woman and I hope she's alright."
Federanich asked, "What is wrong with you? Why would you do such a thing? I mean to anyone, let alone a 91 year old woman."
Neighbors want Setzer punished. Hansut said, "An automatic death penalty - stop fooling around."
They also hope their friend heals soon. Federanich said, "We do hope that she comes out of this quickly and well."
Setzer is in Carbon County prison in lieu of 1 million dollars bail. As of Tuesday afternoon, the victim was in stable condition at an area hospital.
SETZER IS IN CARBON COUNTY PRISON IN LIEU OF ONE MILLION DOLLARS BAIL. HE'LL HAVE A COURT HEARING NEXT MONTH. | | |
