BLAKESLEE, MONROE COUNTY - Police say a Blakeslee man will be cited for animal cruelty for leaving two dogs alone in a house for up to six weeks. His name is Robert McNabb Junior.

Police say he left Ditto and Cherokee alone for more than a month, only stopping by once in a while to toss food and water in the door.

The dogs are both loving and they get along well with families. So Mandy Cole, from rescue group Camp Papillon is shocked someone abandoned them. She said, "It breaks my heart."

Concerned neighbors heard the dogs barking but knew the owner wasn't home. So for the past few weeks, they've been throwing food through a hole in a screen window.

Saturday, a neighbor asked police to check the home. Officers say a rotten smell hit them long before they opened the door. Officer Jim Apgar from the Pocono Mountain Regional Police described it, "Like a really bad barnyard odor."

He said what he saw inside was even worse. Apgar explained, "I've seen abandoned houses that actually look better."

Police said the carpet was soaked with urine and there were several inches of it pooled on the bathroom floor. Cole said, "Ditto has urine burn on his feet from walking on a carpet that was saturated with Urine and there was feces everywhere."

He also had a flea infestation and scratched his skin raw.

Doctor Andrew Church donated his services to bring the dogs back to health. He said, "Once they got out and were licking our faces and were just happy to see us - it just seemed like the right thing to do."

Camp Papillon is glad he helped save two animals but rescue workers know there are many more who need help. Here is to the rescue group's website.

McNabb did not return a phone call for comment.
