Police Share Details of Chase that Ended in Deadly Shooting - Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at 6:20PM EST

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY - Daniel Autenrieth led police on a winding 40 mile chase. It stretched from Northampton County to Monroe county before starting a deadly shootout.
The two county high speed chase ended in Coolbaugh Township, Monroe County. It started about 40 miles away in Northampton County. That made it tough for officers to keep up with Daniel Autenrieth. Captain William Parrish from the Stroud Area Regional Police said, "They're dealing with radio contact with their county control center which then has to call our county control center - which then has to talk to us."

It took State Troopers along with officers from at least five local departments to stop Daniel Autenrieth's speeding vehicle. The Stroud Area Regional Police Department was one of them. Parrish said, "You have to try and predict where the vehicle is gonna go more likely and get in front of it."

Sergeant David Ace said Stroud Area officers tried to use stop sticks twice but Autenrieth missed them. The sticks are enclosed in plastic tubes. When the driver goes over the tubes, they crack and reveal pointed cones, not bare spikes as many people think. Parrish explained,"The cone goes in and allows the tire to lose air slower in a more controlled fashion."

Police finally stopped Autenrieth using something called a PIT Manuever. In it the cars were traveling at about the same speed, when the police car hit the suspect's back corner bumper. That forced the suspect's car to spin out so the police car could push through it. Once the suspect's car stopped, another police car came and boxed him in.
