STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY -Police say DUI crashes are especially high over Memorial Day weekend and now some area departments have a new tool to stop drunk driving.

Monroe County DUI Services and the National Police DefenseFoundation donanatedpre breath tests to three area departments; The Pocono Mountain Regional Police, The Stroud Area Regional Police and the State Police at Swiftwater.

Stroud Area Regional PoliceCaptain William Parrish told Eyewitness News most police do not carry full breathalyzers in their cars. He explained, "It's like a laboratory so you can't carry a laboratory out in the car with you. It's too sensitive for that."

If a driver fails a field sobriety test police bring him or her back to headquarters for breathalyzer or blood tests. The new gadget serves as an additional field sobriety checking tool. Parrish said, "This is just enough to build our probable cause to make the arrest in the first place."

Policewill use their new devices this Memorial Day weekend during stepped up patrols to catch people who are drunk behind the wheel.

Dana Yanis of Stroudsburg said, "I think it's a good thing. People shouldn't be driving around drinking and driving."

While many people think new equipment and increased patrols are good, some complainDUI laws are too strict. A man who chose only to give his first name, Mack, said, "These cops are sitting along back roads where hardly anybody goes and they pull you over and they ruin your life. They'll ruin your life with a dui." But Captain Parrish said impairment starts with the first drink. He explained, "It starts to affect your ability for safe driving." And that's something he wants you to remember as you enjoy your holiday weekend.

The devices cost $400 each. Six were donated.
