Postal Workers Honored for Heroic Acts

Postal Workers Honored for Heroic Acts - Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 6:23PM EST

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - More than a dozen postal workers are being called heroes tonight. The workers were all honored Thursday afternoon for helping to save lives and keep their communities safe.
James Pechulis of Plymouth is one of the people being called a hero.

"I don't feel like a hero. I'm glad I helped the person out," Pechulis said.

Pechulis rescued a man from a burning home in Plymouth last June. The man survived, thanks to the life-long postal carrier.

"When I saw the smoke, I just pulled the mail truck right in front of the house and just ran in. You don't even think, you just do it, to help somebody out," Pechulis said.

Dan McCloe was also honored. He saved a woman who fell inside her home.

"I just had this gut feeling that something was wrong," McCloe said.

The woman was inside the home alone for four days.

"She couldn't get to a phone. She couldn't get no food. She couldn't get no water," McCloe said.

Renee Jablonski is also a hero. She helped a West Pittston woman who fell on ice.

"I was just happy I could be there. I was in the right place at the right time," Jablonski said.

The honors weren't just for letter carriers who save people. Kevin Young saved pets by organizing a supply drive for the Lackawanna County Humane Society.

"Last year, we were able to raise over 10,000 pounds of dog food, cat food, cat litter," Young said.

The men and women who were honored come from all over Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania, from Tioga County to the Poconos.
