Potato Peelers at Scranton Dinner - Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 4:30PM EST
The Friends of the Poor dinner in Scranton Tuesday night is free and benefits less fortunate families.
Many volunteers prepped for the dinner Tuesday morning.
Most of the work involved peeling nearly a thousand pounds of potatoes.
Some of the volunteer groups had names like, The S pud Busters
Volunteer Ann Chieciorka says "That's what we are. We're spud busters."
The Spud Busters is a group of volunteers from Northeast Education Intermediate Unit.
They and dozens of other volunteers are helping prepare for the Friends of the Poor Thanksgiving dinner.
"I don't even like peeling potatoes at home, but here I love it," said one volunteer.
For most here the reason for volunteering is simple.
Michelle Homish from a Prudential volunteer group says, "You have to be part of the community and what's going on. It just makes you feel good."
Volunteer Mary Murphy Fox says, "The most important thing is to give thanks for what we have. And this is how we show appreciation for what we have by sharing with others."
Volunteer Nick Polanichka says, "I like to give back to the community and help the less fortunate people."
About two thousand people will fill the Scranton Cultural Center Tuesday evening.

And to these volunteers, that's what it's all about.
Chieciorka says, "We do it for the people who have less than we do and we're proud to do that."
