WILLIAMSPORT, LYCOMING COUNTY - Colder temperatures have folks thinking about staying warm. In Williamsport, the Lycoming County Assistance office passed out free coats for children. Wannetta Robinson of Loyalsock Township, who received a coat, said "I'm very grateful because you can always use an extra coat and, you know, he has coats for school but I'm going to use this as a play coat for him."
Other folks are working on staying warm indoors. Kim Hayes at R.E. Smith in Williamsport says there are a few simple things you can do to stop heat from escaping. Smith said, "Often times, people think, ‘Oh. I have to tear the siding off my house and reinsulate and all that. Things like insulated curtains, foam backings for electrical outlets…even small things like that can help because every hole you cut into a wall is a potential draft source."
Hayes says business has been brisk selling heating appliances. Suprisingly, despite the rising cost of oil, consumers are still buying oil generated heating products. According to Hayes, they are the biggest sellers. "Maybe because of the convenience of it and older folks that have had wood and coal in the past that, for whatever reason, just can't keep up with it anymore."
Hayes adds that coal is still the most cost effective way to heat homes. | |
