WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- President Bill Clinton made two stops in Northeastern Pennsylvania Wednesday. Call it the tale of two Clintons, the family has recently stumped heavily through the Keystone state ahead of the April 22 primary.
Before a crowd of hundreds, President Clinton pushed his wife's plans for 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. "I know people look at me and say sorta, 'well, we just better count about half of what that ol' Bill Clinton says, after all they're married he's gotta say that stuff.'"
The former commander-in-chief spoke for 45 minutes at Coughlin High School in downtown Wilkes-Barre, targeting a drained middle class. He bills his wife, Senator Hillary Clinton's strategy "the boost" for a fledgling economy. Presidential contender Clinton wants a federal bail-out program to stabilize the sub-prime mortgage crisis. "If everybody who is making their home mortgage payments and can make them, we ought to freeze their monthly mortgage rate for the next five years. It's a little money now, to save 10, 20, 30 times that later," President Clinton explained.
After the speech, those in the crowd called it a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
"And I got to shake his hand and I got a picture close up of him, too, even though I was squished up against the railing from everybody," Deidra Kaminski of Edwardsville said.
"I'm very excited. It was the first time meeting a president. It was great. I hope to meet him (Clinton) again," Julie Green of Kingston said.
It's unknown when or if the Clinton family will return to the area.
