Prius Next Victim of Toyota Recalls - Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at 6:15PM EST

Muncy, Lycoming County-

Not too long ago, it was considered one of the most reliable carmakers in the world. But the downward spiral continues for Toyota, this time with a recall of the 2010 Prius.

For Toyota, this one hurts. The Prius has long been hailed as Toyota's claim to eco-friendly fame.

The recall comes in response to drivers’ complaints of inconsistent braking and tire slippage on rough or slick road surfaces.

Toyota execs say an update needs to be performed on the cars anti-lock brake system software.

Aden Wertz, a Prius owner from Loyalsock Township, said, "Well I'm not really surprised because in the process of making anything mechanical there can always be a flaw in it."

This latest recall affects two vehicles- the 2010 Prius, and the 2010 Lexus HS 250h. Owners of those vehicles can expect to receive letters in the mail starting next week.

Opinions regarding Toyota's handling of the recent slate of recalls are varied.

Wertz noted, "They're pretty up front with it at this point, apologizing and wanting to get back to the quality that they've always been known for."

Others say Toyota's response has been too little, too late.

But loyal Toyota owners like Wertz say they won't give up on their favorite cars.

He added, "No, we've had this for 3 1/2 years, have 116,000 miles on it, and really haven't had a problem whatsoever with it."

We attempted to contact the managers of two local Toyota dealerships. One told us he hadn't been briefed on the details of the recall yet. The other simply didn't return our calls.

And Toyota's not out of the woods just yet.

We're told more than seven thousand 2010 Toyota Camry owners could see recall letters by mid February. That's due to issues with the car's power steering hose and front brake tube.
