Professors Say Murder Victim Was Standout Student - Monday, March 30, 2009 at 5:20PM EST
WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- Police are looking for a man who they say shot and killed his wife, in front of their three young children.
Donnell Buckner is still on the run and considered armed and dangerous. They say he shot his wife Kawaii Rogers-Buckner Sunday night at her home on Lehigh Street in Wilkes-Barre.
Kawaii Rogers-Buckner was a full time nursing student at Wilkes University. She stood out in her nursing class. That's how her professors remember her at Wilkes University. Assistant Nursing Professor Kathy Sheikh says, "When I think of her I think I was someone who was working against great odds and had a real gift for nursing and working with people."
Assistant Professor Wanda Ruppert says, "I saw someone who really worked hard and even against all those challenges that she had to face. She didn't give up, she plugged along."
Rogers-Buckner was plugging along through her sophomore year with a full plate. The 31-year-old was raising three children, going to school full time, all while working as a respiratory therapist. “We weren't sure when she slept," said both assistant professors.
But now her professors are stunned by her murder. Ruppert says, “The first thing I thought of was her smiling face and I'm going to miss that. And the next thing out of my mouth was what about those poor children."
Police say it was Rogers-Buckners husband, Donnell Buckner, who killed her. The murder happened Sunday night at Rogers-Buckner's house. Donnell Buckner is still on the run.
At Rogers-Buckner's home on Lehigh Street, balloons and flowers are left, a sign that someone is mourning the loss of a full time student and full time mom. | |
