Proposed I-80 Toll Locations

Proposed I-80 Toll Locations - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at 5:55PM EST

HARRISBURG- Turnpike officials unveiled their master plan for building toll booths along I-80 on Wednesday.

The final rates still have to be worked out - but it should be about 8 cents a mile - or $2 to $3 per toll. With final federal and state approval, they're going to put 5 of the 9 total tolls in Northeastern and Central PA.

There are 9 tolls proposed across the state, in regions A thru J. Turnpike officials will hold public hearings to decide between the two (three in H) options in each area. Tolls A through E will be in western Pennsylvania. Tolls F through J would be in our area.

Toll F Options
1) Between Exit 161, Bellefonte and Exit 173, Lamar in Centre County, OR
2) Between Exit 173, Lamar and Exit 178, Lock Haven in Clinton County

Toll G Options
1) Between Exit 192, Jersey Shore and Exit 199, Mile Run in Clinton/Union County, OR
2) Between Exit 199, Mile Run and Exit 210, Lewisburg/Williamsport in Union County

Toll H Options
1) Between Exit 215, Limestoneville and Exit 224, Danville in Montour County, OR
2) Between Exit 236, Lightstreet/Bloomsburg and Exit 241, Berwick/Lime Ridge in Columbia County, OR
3) Between Exit 242, Mainville/Mifflinville and Exit 256, Conyngham/Nescopeck in Columbia/
Luzerne County

Toll I Options
1) Between Exit 262, Mountain Top/Hazelton and Exit 273, White Haven/Freeland in Luzerne County, OR
2) Between Exit 273, White Haven/Freeland and Exit 277, Lake Harmony in Luzerne/
Carbon County

Toll J Options
J1 Between Exit 293, Scranton and Exit 298, Scotrun in Monroe County, OR
J2 Between Exit 310, Delaware Water Gap and the New Jersey State Line Monroe

With public input they'll settle on the exact 5 locations by early next year. All of the locations are being designed so that there are options to exit the highway and use local roads to avoid the toll.’

And these won't look like your traditional toll booths. It's called open road tolling. You won't have to stop or even slow down as you go through them. You cruise along at 65 MPH and it either reads your E-Z Pass or photographs your license plate - and then you'll get a bill.

Now you can avoid paying some tolls by getting an E-Z Pass. The turnpike's doing it as an incentive to keep people using I-80. With E-Z Pass you won't have to pay for the first toll area you pass through. So if your trip on I-80 only takes you through one toll, your trip's free. If you go through multiple tolls, then you'll start paying the second time you hit one.

If all goes according to plan and gets final approval, the tolls will be built starting late next summer and running in the summer of 2010.
