Puppy Stolen in Latest of Rash of Luzerne Co. Break-ins

Puppy Stolen in Latest of Rash of Luzerne Co. Break-ins - Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 11:17PM EST

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY- Someone stole a 4-month-old puppy from a pet store in Hazleton Friday night. Now the owner is hoping someone can help solve this crime and he’s offering a reward. Meanwhile police are checking whether this burglary is connected to a rash of recent break-ins in the area.

A State Police investigator was on the scene Saturday taking pictures of the pet theft crime scene. Someone stole a puppy from Brookside Pups and Stuff on Route 93 in Hazleton. The pet store owner came in early Saturday morning to find the puppy missing. He is frustrated. Owner Daniel Kane said, “Especially this time of year with the economy I'm just glad they didn’t take everything.”

Kane says he is offering a $1,500 reward for the return of the puppy. That's how much it would have cost to purchase the puppy.

The American Kennel Club says they have seen alarming rise in dog thefts in recent months. From parking lots to pet stores and even backyards, more dogs are disappearing. The thieves resell or breed the dogs to sell their offspring. Other swiped pups are returned for the often hefty rewards the desperate owners offer.

As for Kane he is confident police will find the dog-napper because they are processing fingerprints at the crime scene.

Police say thieves have recently targeted more than 6-businesses in Luzerne County. All have been along Route 309 in Mountain Top. Just this week, thieves broken into a tobacco store, a beauty shop and the PSC gas station in Fairview Township. They also targeted Abe’s Hot Dogs in Wright Township.

And just like the pet store theft, all the burglarized businesses have something in common. The burglar cuts the power, hoping to disable any alarm system, then busts in looking for quick cash.

Police say they do have some leads but ask anyone with information on the burglaries in Mountain Top and Hazleton to call 9-1-1.
