STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY - If you're thinking about brining a new pet home for the holidays, there's a way you can get a purebred animal for the price of a mixed breed.

Eyewitness News learned dogs with pedigrees are filling animal shelters. Dogs like "Coach." He's a year old Jack Russell Terrier . His owners gave him up for adoption because they couldn't afford to keep him.

Jeannie Lee helps run the Animal Welfare Society of Monroe Shelter in Stroudsburg. She said, "People are losing their homes now and they can't afford their dogs - they're moving out of the area to find work."

That leaves dogs like Ginger the Akita homeless. Ginger is about seven years old. Marie Grimm of AWSOM said, "She's a very good dog. Very housebroken. Very sweet. Very affectionate. Very healthy. Wonderful dog."

If the shelter doesn't have the exact animal you're looking for here - you don't need to worry - because they have a waiting list full of people looking to turn their animals in. Lee said, "I think the waiting list yesterday was 22 -- Pomeranians - German Shepherds - Labs - you name it."

Buying a dog with a pedigree can cost you several hundred dollars. The adoption fee for any dog in the shelter is $100. So you can save money and save an animal at the same time.

The AWSOM Shelter is a no kill center. It only has 18 kennels. So the more animals people save, the more space there is for other pets in need.
