If you're a PPL customer confused about choosing a new electricity supplier, you can get some answers tonight. is holding a public meeting in less than two hours in Scranton. Consumer reporter Jeff Chirico is live in the newsroom with details.

Direct Energy is one two suppliers offering competitive rates to PPL customers next year. This morning the company held a meeting to help clear up confusion and pitch their product.

More than a dozen people came to hear representatives of Direct Energy speak a hotel conference room in Wilkes-Barre Tuesday morning. The topic --rising electric rates and their options. Carol Santarserio of Moosic says "I've been reading about it and go online for a few months since I heard this was going to change and I'm here to find out about this supplier." Tom James of Harding says "when you're retired and on a fixed income you don't want to hear about things going up."

Tom James is talking about his PPL bill. When state-imposed rate caps expire at the end of this month, his bill will increase 30 percent unless he shops around. "I think our offers are most attractive in the PPL service territory," says Cory Byzewski, vice president of Direct Energy --one company offering lower rates than PPL.

Here's the break down. If a PPL customer doesn't switch suppliers, they'll pay 10.55 cents a kilowatt hour in 2010. Competitors and are both offering new customers a ten percent discount, 9.49 cents per kilowatt hour. But Direct Energy is offering an introductory rate of 8.99 cents for the first three months. But, leave direct energy before the year term expires and you're subject to a one hundred dollar fee.

A PPL official encourages customers to shop. He says it will not hurt PPL if you choose another company. And he promises customers will not see any disruption in service. Dennis Urban of PPL says "regardless of customer's choice on generation portion of the bill, we continue to be the company that maintains wires, respond to outages at customers house."

Direct Energy is holding meetings in Allentown Wednesday, December 9 at 10-11:30 and 7-9pm at the Palace Center, Imperial Ballroom, 623 Hanover Avenue, Allentown.

There are meetings in Harrisburg on Thursday December 10 at 10-11:30am and 7-9pm at The State Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 North Street, Harrisburg.
