SHENANDOAH, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY- The homicide of Luis Ramirez has sparked a storm of controversy centered on a small coal town's race relations. The Mexican immigrant was savagely beaten to death mid-July, according to court papers. Police said a group of as many as six white teenagers crossed paths with the 25-year-old Ramirez.
Relations further splintered Tuesday with accusations launched during a news conference the local police and prosecutors' investigation lacked expediency. Critics charged those heading the case dragged their feet in light of who was accused in the crime, even despite the fact it was a homicide case. Two teens were charged with homicide last week. Another faces a lesser charge of aggravated assault.
A candlelight vigil brought about 80 people to an outdoor area near Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Calls and screams to move forward with a message of peace filled the air. Ramirez fiance Crystal Dillman said Ramirez' body was transported back to his homeland, Mexico. She was sure he had been laid to rest.
