LONG POND, MONROE COUNTY - Rain soaked Pocono Raceway while Karon Kwiecinski raced to put up her tent. She said, It's exhilirating - it's different than a sunny day. It gives you a little variety in your life."
Karon decided to camp at the track rather than rent a hotel room for race weekend. She told Eyewitness News the effort saved her several hundred dollars. "It's a lifetime experience for the children - to camp out in a safe place," she said.
The wind, steady rain, and mud logged grass couldn't keep her down. She said, "People like a little variety in their life, a little vacation or things different from the every day - day to day."
"Fans aren't just battling the elements this year - they're also dealing with some tough economic storms. Bonnie Confer saved all year so she could bring her kids Alissa and Adam to the race. Brian Buddon and his kids also saved their pennies all year long. They didn't want to skip a ten year long race tradition. He said, "It doesn't matter what you pay. As long as they're having fun. I'm having fun. It doesn't matter."
So despite the elements and the economy, it looks like fans will find a way to treat themselves to a little vacation. | |
