WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- People are reacting to Saturday's pit bull shooting at the River Common in Wilkes-Barre. A stray pit bull was shot and killed after running loose and attacking a police officer.

Eyewitness News talked with dog owner Erica Brojakowski from Wilkes-Barre. She had lunch at the River Common and sat with her dog Lilly.

She said, "It's sad. It's sad for the dog because they're not aggressive. You know, it's training and ownership and responsibility."

This isn't the first problem with stray pit bulls at the River Common. On June 29th, two stray pits attacked and killed a dog walking with its owner.

Christopher Tobin of Edwardsville said, "Aggressive dogs are a big problem. Sign right there says must be on a leash at all times and everything like that. I don't think it's too hard of a rule to follow."

Wilkes-Barre city officials say they will help fix the problem by cracking down on the city leash law.

The city of Wilkes-Barre tried to ban pit bulls back in 2005, but state law stops cities from singling out certain breeds.

Wilkes-Barre mayor Thomas Leighton says the city's options are limited. He's talking with state lawmakers, asking them to consider changing city dog laws.

"If those pit bulls were on a leash then we would not be sitting here. We would not be sitting here if that dog was on a leash on Saturday. There is a owner of these dogs, we have to find them and when we find them we will cite them accordingly," said Leighton.
