Reaction Harsh to Word of Charges Against Judges

Reaction Harsh to Word of Charges Against Judges - Monday, January 26, 2009 at 9:05PM EST

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- People all around Luzerne County are reacting to the news that federal charges have been filed against two Luzerne County judges. And there's no shortage of opinions.

It's upsetting to some people like James Valenti of Kingston. He says he was sentenced as a juvenile by Judge Mark Ciaverella. "From my experiences and experience people I know he was very unfair, very mean. And I guess he had it coming. What comes around goes around," he said.

Federal prosecutors say Ciaverella and Judge Michael Conahan compromised the juvenile court system. Court papers show they steered juvenile's to certain detention facilities, even when it wasn't recommended.

That's something that can ruin a child's life says John Gwyn of Wilkes-Barre. "When you put a kid in jail then that's all they know. Then they just move on to the next jail. It's a shame," he said.

Gwyn says Ciaverella and Conahan's sentences won't be enough. As part of a plea agreement, the two will spend years in federal prison. Donal McGinnis of Wilkes-Barre says, "Give them what they got coming to them. You do the time."

And time will tell how the Luzerne County judicial system will recover from these charges. Acting President Judge Chester Muroski says no trials will be delayed.
