WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- It's deadline day for reassessments in Luzerne County. All property value appeals were to be heard by Friday. But, about 3,000 are still waiting to be heard.
Workers are filing papers and typing away in Luzerne County's Reassessment Office. They're preparing to send out an initial certification of county property values.
Assessment Director Anthony Alu says, "We've been lucky, really every projection I've looked at we turned out under any estimate that I said. We came in underneath it so I was kind of happy with it."
Alu says a snapshot of assessed values is almost ready. It will be sent to the county, municipalities, and school districts. The snapshot will be used to help estimate budget revenue for 2009.
But there's still work to be done. About 3,000 property owners appeals have to be heard. But Alu says no matter how long appeals take this year, all property values will be set before the first tax bill is sent out for next year.
And Alu is confident those values will be correct. "There's a lot of work to do, especially around certification. I'll be in over the weekend, some of our staff will be on call. We have to get this done and then go through the rest of the appeals and hopefully then we'll implement with success," says Alu.
