EAST STROUDSBURG - The poor economy has pushed the value of recyclables into the trash. Now instead of paying people to recycle some places are charging them.
Things are so rough on the industry that one area recycling center is shutting down for a while.
When Bill Corona pulled up to the Twin Boroughs Recycling Center Monday he saw a big "closed" sign.
"It's kind of a surprise," he said.
The place is closed and it will remain closed for at least a month. Roger Dobson was also surprised. He said, "I guess they're short on money so there's not much they can do about it I guess."
Officials say money is only one reason. They have a shortage of workers. Some are sick and injured. There's also a problem with people dumping trash.
"It's a sad thing. They're pushing for recycling, recycling, recycling for everything and then they go and close it down," said Dobson.
Corona added, "I want to do the right thing you know, recycle goods. But now it seems like I can't do the right thing."
While the gates at the recycling center are locked for now, the boroughs say you can still recycle with curbside pickup. But some people say they'd rather come here.
"I like brining my own stuff down this way I can sleep in on Monday morning if I want to," he said.
Corona can now recycle at drop off locations anywhere in Monroe County. The boroughs of Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg will post a public notice when the recycling center opens again.
Monroe County residents can drop off recycling at any blue bin. There is one located near the intersection of routes 191 and 447 near Analomink. | | |
