Red Cross Running Short of Money after Fires

Red Cross Running Short of Money after Fires - Sunday, March 15, 2009 at 11:09PM EST

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- One day after flames destroyed an apartment building in Scranton the victims were picking up the pieces.
The exact cause of the fire in the 800-block of Luzerne Street is still under investigation. The Red Cross of Lackawanna County is now helping most of the 15 residents with food, shelter and clothing.

But they say they need some help themselves. Volunteers have already responded to nearly 50 emergencies this year and they're running out of money. Charlotte Wright said, “A lot of people don't have insurance, they don’t have alternative plans or savings and so we are providing assistance over a longer period which is obviously costing us a lot more."

Fire victim Hasan Choice said, “If there weren't people like them, then we would've had no money. We would have been on the street."

If you’d like to help, call 207-0100 or visit
