SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - While northeastern Pennsylvania is dealing with snow and rain, our neighbors in New Jersey are cleaning up from massive flooding.

They are now getting help from the American Red Cross in Lackawanna County. Two volunteers left the Scranton chapter to assist in the disaster zone Tuesday morning.

Wayne Frick and Donald Diehl are both excited to get to work. For Diehl, this will be his first trip into a disaster zone.

"I don't know what to expect down there. All I know is that they've had major flooding and that's it, so whatever happens, we're gonna take it as we take it," Diehl said.

Frick has been an American Red Cross volunteer since 2005. He's already helped out in two disaster zones. He's cleaned up from tornadoes and hurricanes. He says it's a good way for people to help.

"You just meet a lot of new people and stuff down there, you know?" Frick said. "We met people from Alaska and all that."

Central New Jersey has been pounded by heavy rain recently. The two local volunteers will help serve meals and hand out cleaning supplies.

"It's amazing what the volunteers do. These gentlemen are going down there, they do not get paid. They're at the kindness of their heart and their time," Brian Wrightson with the American Red Cross said.

For Diehl, the trip comes at a unique time. He just became a father for the second time on March 24th. He still decided not to back out on his committment.

"That is tough but I know when she grows older, she'll see this and remember this and think, okay, that's my dad," Diehl said.

The two local volunteers could be in New Jersey for up to three weeks.
