Remembering Watsontown Mayor Robert Brown

Remembering Watsontown Mayor Robert Brown - Monday, April 13, 2009 at 5:31PM EST

Watsontown, Northumberland County-
In central Pennsylvania, a family and a community are mourning the loss of a beloved public servant.

Here’s a look back at the life of Watsontown Mayor Robert Brown.

Most knew him simply as Brownie, or Bob.

His family will remember Robert Brown as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

The people of Watsontown will recall his love for his God, his hometown, and his country.

Watsontown Police Chief Dennis Derr recalled, “A man who was dedicated to this community and the safety and welfare of the people who lived here.”

Brown died Friday following a five-year battle with cancer.

He was a veteran of the Air Force, a businessman, an avid fisherman, and a friend to so many.

Brown served as mayor of Watsontown for 24 years.

Family friend William Kear explained, “He was a strong mayor and advocated a lot of community improvements and tried his best to mediate and resolve conflicts within the borough.”

Brown made Watsontown his home for more than 50 years. And by all accounts, he made quite an impact on everyone he met.

Kear added, “Bob Brown was the epitome of a concerned citizen, involved in his community. He tried his best to make Watsontown a good community.”

Brown worked tirelessly to provide the best for the borough’s police and fire departments.

He could always be found putting smiles on folks’ faces at the yearly firemen’s carnival. Kear noted, “He was on the PA system working the crowd the whole night long. Everyone got to know him that way.”

Brown was also an entertaining storyteller who made everyone around him feel warm and welcome.

He’s survived by his wife, four children, nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Derr said, “He was a real fine gentleman to work with. He’ll sure be missed by us all here.”

Robert Brown was 77 years old.

A public memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 15th at 2pm at First Presbyterian Church in Watsontown.
