Renewable Energy Project Finished in Taylor

Renewable Energy Project Finished in Taylor - Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 04:02AM EST

TAYLOR, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - Tens of thousands of homes are being powered tonight by a new renewable energy project. It is based at the Alliance Landfill in Taylor.

With a ceremonial ribbon cutting, the landfill celebrated the completion of its long-awaited gas-to-energy project Thursday afternoon.

The project will now create enough electricity to power up to 20,000 homes every day.

"I think it's essential for the area and essential for the state and nation simply if it's going to supply power to 20,000 homes everyday," Ed Borek said.

Borek lives in Ransom Township. He thinks the project will have big benefits.

"It's gonna benefit the local area. I think it perhaps will bring the cost down of electricity in our area," Borek said.

The project is an extensive one. Landfill gas, which is already on the site, is vacuumed out, refrigerated, compressed and then piped nearly 20 miles to a power company in Archbald.

"Look at what is happening now in the Gulf of Mexico," spokesman John Hambrose said. "That's because of our dependence on fossil fuel. If we get enough renewable energy coming and ways to conserve fuel, we might not be so reliant on oil, coal and natural gas and that's good for the future."

The process to get this renewable energy project up-and-running has been six years in the making. Before the equipment was built, there was nothing on the land.

"This area really was just a flat, grassy area before the plans and permitting was completed and within five months, in cooperation with contractors and the project managers, they were able to build the plant and actually have it operating," Alliance district manager Gleen Kempa said.

More than $40 million dollars was spent on the project but officials say it is already paying off.
