Restoring Hanlon's Grove at Nay Aug

Restoring Hanlon's Grove at Nay Aug - Monday, February 9, 2009 at 6:15PM EST

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- A long neglected part of Nay Aug Park will soon come back to life. New plans were unveiled Monday morning to restore Hanlon's Grove.
For the last two years the area of Nay Aug Park known as Hanlon's Grove has sat empty. That's about to change. This vision of the area, complete with picnic tables, grills and open space is about to be a reality.

Miguel Ortigosa of Leadership Lackawanna said, “I believe this place is gonna be good for the families. It’s gonna be good for young couples, singles, anyone who wants to hang out."

News about the possible changes started spreading fast. Everyone seems to be excited.

Susan Robinson of Scranton said, “There's a lot of people in town that like to get out of the "in town" part. They come up and walk and enjoy it. That’s what its all about."

Besides the picnic tables and open space, another highlight of the project will be a waterfall. It will be built on these steps, which used to lead down to the old amphitheater.

That amphitheater, which used to be in Hanlon's Grove, collapsed after the Valentine's Day storm in 2007. It was taken down shortly thereafter.

All of the changes are expected to cost $125,000. Organizers are now looking for corporate and private donations along with volunteers. Nikki Barberof the Scranton Chamber of Commerce said, “We're looking for any kind of donations. We need people to help spread gravel. We need people that have masonry skills and we also need excavators."

Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty says he's excited about the idea and can't wait until it becomes a reality. “It’s the last part of the park that we have not renovated and we're so proud this will be the last piece and we'll complete it," said Doherty.
