WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- A big reward posted tocatch the creator of a big eyesore in Wilkes-Barre.
The Ohav Zedek synagoguewas vandalized over the weekend. The Jewish Federation ofGreater Wilkes-Barre is posting $5,000 as reward to catch andconvict the person responsible.
Murray Ufberg of the JewishFederation of Greater Wilkes-Barre says, "It's vile, it's abhorrent, and ithink in some instances to a lot of people, it's frightening."Ufberg is talking aboutanti-Semitic graffiti sprayed on the Ohav Zedek synagogue. It happened sometimebefore Saturday morning. The Jewish federationwill clean it this Thursday.
Ufberg says this was nousual prank. The word Jude was spraypainted on the synagogue. He says it was used tosignify Jewish people in Nazi Germany. He also says anotherspray painted word is German for scum. "It's a rathersophisticated prank. It's not usual for pranksters to go to the trouble tolearn things like this and utilize that language in the things that they did,"says Ufberg.
The graffiti will likelybe seen by a big audience. Thousands are expectedto pack into the neighboring Wilkes University Martz Center Tuesday morning.
But with the new rewardmoney posted, and a plan to clean the graffiti, the federation hopes it won'tremain an eyesore for long.
If you have anyinformation leading to an arrest, you're asked to call the Wilkes-Barre Police Department. | |
