MAHANOY CITY, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY- Tuesday’s election will lead to another special election for a state senate seat. That seat was held by the late Senator James Rhoades. Rhoades died from injuries in a car crash last month. He was re-elected to an 8th term Tuesday night.

Senator Rhoades had a landslide victory over his Democratic opponent. His win now leads to another election and people in his hometown say they will support his successor.

Photographs of the late Senator James Rhoades fill his office window in Mahanoy City. Black bunting still outlines the windows. This is where for some 28 years Jim Rhoades helped his constituents.

That came to a sudden end last month when he was involved in a violent crash in the Poconos. On Tuesday he easily defeated his Democratic opponent. Edward Tobin is not surprised. "Well, the people of Mahanoy City and the surrounding areas will never forget him and what he had done. It’s going to take a good man to fill his shoes. It’s going to take time," he said.

First the votes have to be certified. That will take place on November 24th. Then the Lieutenant Governor has 60 days to select a date for a special election. The election must take place before the April primary.

Republicans and Democrats first have to select a candidate for that special election. Tobin has some ideas. "I would say one of the family should run, one of the son-in-laws should run. They are really educated," he told Eyewitness News.

The Rhoades victory was the talk of the town Tuesday, and some say Rhoades should get some special tribute. Marge Drynan said, "I'm not surprised he was well known. Mr Rhoades did an awful lot for people."

Eyewitness News also spoke with P. J. Symons. He ran against Rhoades and lost. He said he was not interested in running again, but thanked those who voted for him.
