Road Construction Returns

Road Construction Returns - Monday, March 30, 2009 at 5:00PM EST

Lycoming County-
Two major PennDOT projects got underway Monday near Williamsport in Lycoming County. Both will take place along a five-mile stretch of Interstate 180.

PennDOT spokesperson Rick Mason said, “From the motorists’ perspective, it’s going to look like one long project, essentially from Arch Street in Williamsport to the Loyalsock Creek Bridge in Montoursville.”

The start of the spring road construction season was marked by the return of the $20 million rehabilitation project.

Drivers, like real estate auctioneer Michael Roan, say they’re getting ready for the usual delays and traffic headaches.

Roan noted, “You can get frustrated or you can just be calm. It’s a pain, but in the long run it’s worth it. Just like the bridge for four years. It’s definitely worth it once it’s done.”

Over at the Merry Go Round, a second hand shop just off Interstate 180, manager Ana Cillo says the work doesn’t affect business too much. But she says it can be an inconvenience for her and her workers.

Cillo added, “The only thing is maybe for the employees trying to get here, making sure you have enough time. You think you have plenty of time and you want to stop and get that cup of coffee, and you realize you’re close to the exit, but it’s going to take you a bit to get off the exit.”

Pennsylvania’s share of the economic stimulus plan means there’ll be even more road projects this season than in years past. So PennDOT officials are preaching extra caution.

Mason explained, “You’ve got to pay full attention when you’re approaching these work zones and passing through them because the scene can change in a flash.”

Police will be out in force to make sure drivers take their time and keep highway workers as safe as possible.

Mason added, “We want them to buckle up, drive alert, drive sober. Refrain from tailgating, arrive alive. We want everyone to drive safe in Pennsylvania.”

The Interstate 180 rehabilitation project will require periodic lane closures in both directions of travel. PennDOT officials expect to wrap up their work on 180 by the end of this year.
