Road Hogs Tie up Traffic - Monday, February 2, 2009 at 4:02PM EST

SCOTRUN - A truck went hog wild and caused a major accident in Monroe County. The crash left road hogs blocking the highway all day long.

The accident happened at about 8:30 Monday morning in the eastbound lane of interstate 80, about two miles from the Tannersville exit.

Eyewitness News stopped by the accident site where we found a pig problem.

Morning rush hour slowed, then stopped in Scotrun. "It's bad. Real bad," said one driver. People sat in traffic as morning slipped into afternoon. "It's taking to long," complained a driver.

"After people crawled through the hours of traffic, they finally saw the problem, a five truck pile up - including one tractor trailer full of nearly 200 pigs.

The pigs were headed to a meat processing plant when their driver got caught up in a chain reaction crash. He survived the impact and crawled out the truck window, apparently unhurt. Tow truck operator Bob Bolus told us the hogs weren't so lucky. He explained, "Of course in the impact all of them slid forward and those in the front half of the trailer were pretty much crushed."

Bolus estimates twenty or thirty of the animals died. Many others were injured so badly they had to be put to sleep. The rest cried and screamed while truckers put up a ramp and covered the sides with plywood so the pigs wouldn't run into traffic.

"We were told they would pretty much get pretty violent if people waved at them or did anything they would actually attack you," said Bolus.

The pigs didn't attack anyone but the road hogs sure messed up the day's travel schedule.

Two truck drivers were hurt in the crash. One broke his arm. The other had facial injuries. Police have not yet released details about what caused the accident.
