Rocky Road for Local United Way Campaign

Rocky Road for Local United Way Campaign - Friday, November 7, 2008 at 5:02PM EST

Williamsport, Lycoming County-

More than 40 human services programs in Lycoming County could soon be in dire straits. Those agencies count on annual contributions from the United Way.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lycoming County strives each day to make a difference in the lives of local children. They rely heavily on thousands of dollars they get each year from the United Way.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Executive Director Damon Anderson explained, "It really goes into the lives of these kids by providing a mentor for them. And it provides things such as activities and opportunities for them and for us the ability to make sure those volunteers are there in those kids' lives."

But so far, their annual fundraising drive is stalling.

United Way officials set out to raise $1.5 million. Usually at this point in the campaign they'd be about 60 to 70% of the way to their goal. This year, they're only a quarter of the way there.

If the money doesn't come in, all those charitable agencies may have to go without.

Lycoming County United Way worker Rosann Pelleschi noted, "In our economic times, the ones that most need it, need it more. And there's more of them. There's growing numbers everyday."

Anderson said, "It's really quite simple. If the dollars aren't there, nor are the services."

However, there are still three weeks left in the United Way's campaign. They're pleading with everyone to get involved.

Because nobody wants to imagine the alternative becoming a reality.

Anderson added, "Basically when it comes down to it, you're going to see less services in your community, less people being helped, and less people step up."

And perhaps the biggest fear is that this could happen at a time when communities need to stand together the most.

There is still time to get involved. Check out this link, where you can find information on how to help.
