SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Members of Scranton's popular Farmer's Market are looking for ways to raise a million dollars to make roof repairs at their complex. Board member Ruthie Griggs says the 310 foot long roofs that cover the farmer's stands and the market's kitchen and concession stand are beyond repair. The structures were built in 1948.
Mrs. Griggs says the farmer's can't afford to have the complex replaced without some local, state and or federal help. The Department of Agriculture offers a low interest loan program for such a project. But Mrs. Griggs says its unlikely the 27 member farmers could afford to pay the loan back over the required 10 to 15 -year-period.
Representative Frank Andrews Shimkus has included a one point five million dollar line item in the State Budget which could be used for the roof replacement if the farmer's association can come up with matching funds for half the project cost.
Mrs. Griggs says the Farmer's Market will open on schedule on July 18th. Association members are hoping to be able to raise funds this year to have their complex rebuilt in time for next year's season.
