SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- The Northeast Regional Counter Terrorism Task Force has purchased two Bearcat Armored Rescue Vehicles which are now available for police and emergency operations throughout the area. One will be stationed in Lackawanna County, the other in Bethlehem.
The Lackawanna County and Scranton City SWAT Teams began training with tone of the units Tuesday afternoon. During the exercise the vehicle was able to pull close to an officer acting as a shooting victim. While an armed team member provided cover from a turret on top of the truck, other officers were able to lift the simulated victim into the vehicle to be driven to safety.
The Bearcat's heavy armor is bullet resistant and allows police to carry men and equipment close to any crime scene. It can be used as a protective command post or to transport officers into and out of so called "hot zones."
The vehicle's cost is approximately $250,000.
