SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- The Scranton Salvation Army began handing out toys and turkeys to those in need for Christmas on Wednesday morning.

Nearly a thousand children from more than 400 families will be served by the program this year.

But Army leaders say donations to the annual kettle drive are down by about $7,000 with Christmas less than week away.

Salvation Army officials say the cold weather and an ice storm last weekend forced them to close several collection sites.

They're hoping to make up the shortfall between now and Christmas Eve.
