Sanofi Recalls 800,000 Swine Flu Vaccines

Sanofi Recalls 800,000 Swine Flu Vaccines - Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 5:20PM EST

MONROE COUNTY – H1N1 vaccine manufacturer Sanofi Pastuer has issued a recall for 800,000 doses of the pediatric vaccine. However, the company stresses it's not a safety issue.

Sanofi routinely tests its vaccine after it has been distributed to doctors. They found the potency of the vaccine for children 6 to 35 months had dropped below the recommended limit.

Further tests found four lots, or roughly 800,000 doses, were affected. A spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Department of Health says 15,100 doses were shipped to 20-facilities within the state. But, there's no word exactly where.

Most of the vaccine has not been administered. Children who did receive the vaccine do not face any increased health risks. And they're still likely to be protected from swine flu.

And there’s another bitter pill for Sanofi Pasteur. The company is planning to lay off workers.

The company wouldn't say how many people would lose their jobs. But they did say the cuts would start now and continue for two years.

A Sanofi spokesperson said they would not give an exact number because it might find other jobs for some of those people within the company.
