Scarantino To Plead Guilty, Still Getting Paychecks

Scarantino To Plead Guilty, Still Getting Paychecks - Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 11:34PM EST

YATESVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY- A Scranton lawyer will assume the role of special prosecutor to investigate if the Pittston Area School Board should begin termination proceedings against disgraced Superintendent Ross Scarantino. It was announced on Wednesday Scarantino intends to plead guilty to charges he steered business into the district in exchange for kickbacks. School Board President Mark SInger said the federal case against Scarantino remains sealed. He acknowledged the attorney hired to conduct the investigation on behalf of the board may have to gather evidence. Under state law and in accordance with Scarantino's contract, the board has to hold a special hearing to weigh evidence against Scarantino. There's no word how long the process could last. Scarantino is expected to be in court as early as next week to enter his guilty plea.
