School Districts Taking Precautions Against Flu

School Districts Taking Precautions Against Flu - Monday, May 4, 2009 at 11:00AM EST

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Some schools in our area have already begun to take action against the swine flu. The Scranton School District is briefing teachers to look for symptoms among students.
Scranton School District sent out a district-wide phone message last Thursday alerting students and their parents about swine flu concerns.

Scranton High School alone is home to more than 1,800 students in a district that has some 9,700 students. With that many children, there's a risk that viruses can spread quickly.

The district has posted signs throughout rest rooms instructing students to carefully wash their hands. Also alcohol-based hand sanitizing solution is placed near all sinks in school buildings..

Scranton School Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction Dan Williams says the district is taking even more steps. "Today, the administration, the faculty and staff will be receiving guidelines to review, post in their classrooms and also to review with the children," he said.

The guidelines include teaching coughing etiquette and other things students can do to prevent spreading germs and viruses.

The Scranton School District, like other area districts, will get daily updates from the state and federal government until the threat of swine flu passes.

Currently there are no signs of the flu anywhere in the district.
