TUNKHANNOCK, WYOMING COUNTY- Gerald Wiernusz is confined to his home. Under the terms of his sentence, he'll spend 16 months around the house.
Wiernusz is under house arrest after pleading guilty in January to charges he pointed a handgun last summer at some teenagers who were near his Kingston property.
In September, the Tunkhannock Area School Board suspended Wiernusz, a high school teacher, without pay.
While his case has meandered through the system, Wiernusz remains an employee of the school district. Several emails and phone calls to Eyewitness News from district parents, asked the question, why hasn't Wiernusz been terminated.
Superintendent Michael Healey clearly told us Thursday night he would not grant us an on-camera interview and later scolded a news photographer. Healey would only confirm that Wiernusz was suspended without pay. He refused to address the issue further.
Oddly, a teacher identified only by number 533, had asked the board on Thursday night to approve a medical sabbatical. The same identification was used in September, when number 533 was suspended without pay. The district refused on Wednesday to identify the teacher. Assistant Superintendent Ann Way said on the phone it was a personnel issue.
Wiernusz defense attorney said he didn't have information available to him to field questions about employment, saying his client has a separate attorney for that.
