School Shopping For Less Than $20

School Shopping For Less Than $20 - Friday, August 21, 2009 at 5:30PM EST

DICKSON CITY, LACKAWANNA COUNTY --The Eyewitness News Consumer Unit puts $20 to the test. Is it enough to get one kid ready for school? Consumer reporter Jeff Chirico is here with the surprising results.

Retailers are offering deep discounts on a few select items to get you in the door. We scoured the circulars looking for those deals to get a young lady ready to hit the books. Sixth-grader Kate Genovese is about to learn a lesson she probably won't study in middle school. Smart shopping.

"What we want you to do is use this $20 to buy as much as you can but you need to be a smart shopper. Get best deals out there. Ok?" She only buys what's on her list.

She starts with a WalMart door buster --grabbing 7 spiral notebooks for 15 cents each. She also picks a 3-ring binder for a $1.78. Next on the list --a book bag. She likes the pink and purple one for 9 bucks. But this mesh one costs less than 4. "Is it price or style more important for you? Both. To me the style." We give her a break and let her get what she wants.

WalMart sells ten pencils for 50 cents and index cards for 49. But we did a little shopping before and found them cheaper at other stores.

Like Walgreens. Pencils here are a penny cheaper. We also found glue sticks, crayons, and pens for 49 cents. The best deal --a ten pack of mechanical pencils for 49 cents. But half as many costs four times as much. Scouring the sales ads pays off. "I thought it was going to be more than that because we got a lot of stuff here."

We finish our shopping at CVS. We found the best deal on folders. 8 for a dollar.

At WalMart, we spent $12.54. Walgreens spent $2.60 And at CVS-- $2.09 with the CVS ExtraCare card. For a total of $17.23. And Kate filled her list --and the dining room table. "What did you learn? To look at prices. Style doesn't matter. Price does."

Proof that you're never too young to learn how to pinch pennies.

Our tips --make a list first. Scour the ads for the best deals and only buy what you need. Remember, deals change every week. And some door busters only last a few days.
