FORTY FORT, LUZERNE COUNTY- Schools across the area are starting the semester without any students vaccinated for swine flu. The state health department doesn't expect the vaccine before mid-October.

Eyewitness News stopped by the Wyoming Valley West School District to find out what's being done to slow the spread of the virus.

The lesson was hand washing on the first day of school Tuesday at Dana Street Elementary. "We want to scrub our hands really good so you see the bubbles. That's how you know that you're cleaning the germs off," said 3rd grade teacher Sarah Doyle.

She and the rest of the faculty are taking the first steps toward keeping the school's nearly 600-students swine flu free.

Last year, first grader Andrew Novrocki brought home, as school children often do, his fair share of germs. "I don't think I've been that sick since I've been in elementary school," said his father David.

David Novrocki knows as both a father and administrator, how schools can be an incubator for illness such as swine flu. HeÕs the Principal of Dana Street Elementary.

"As a parent, I would be concerned that number one the district was being proactive with something where my son or daughter would go to school. And I'm very confident to say we are being very proactive," he said.

The school has about a thousand hand pump sanitizers -- and will install more automatic sanitizers next week -- focusing on key areas like the computer room, cafeteria and school gym. ÒParents will also play an important role in trying to prevent the spread of swine flu. The school district is sending home elementary students with this letter detailing some important do's and don'ts,Ó he said.

That letter outlines what steps the school is taking and how parents can help. School Nurse Ed Sartin said, "Being very cautious about sending their students, their children to school with any type of fever, respiratory or flu like symptoms.

And prevent the spread of swine flu before it starts.

While the H1N1 vaccine is not expected to be available until next month, regular flu shots are available.

CVS and Walgreens started administering seasonal flu shots on Tuesday. Both companies are starting the flu shots earlier than last year.

A greater demand for the vaccines is expected as everyone braces for a tough flu season. And Rite Aid has already begun issuing flu shots.
