POTTSVILLE, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY- More than 25 people turn themselves in at once in Schuylkill County court. Hardly any of them went to jail. It's part of a one shot opportunity to clear bench warrants.
Eric Lang of Mahanoy City sat and waited until his name was called Monday at the Schuylkill County court in Pottsville. He has one thing on his mind. "Stay out of jail. That's what I'm trying to do, stay out of jail," said Lang.
Lang has a few minor charges that led to a warrant for his arrest. Now he's trying to straighten out his record. "It means everything, staying out of trouble, you know what mean? Clearing my record," said Lang.
The district attorney's office is going light on Lang and others if they turn themselves in. But for some, the charges they've been running from finally caught up with them. "Some of those people are going to jail. We've taken two or three to jail and we're taking a couple of more," said Schuylkill County District Attorney James Goodman.
Goodman says this day saves work for his office. "We want to send a message to people that if you have a criminal case, you have a responsibility and your responsibility is to get resolved," said Goodman.
Lang's day was easy. He signed paperwork and set a court date for late August. This is the second year the Schuylkill County District Attorney's office ran this warrant clearing day.
Last year, the day cleared about 40 warrants. | |
