A Schuylkill County sex offender learns how long he'll spend in state prison. 26-year-old Scott Donati of Orwigsburg pled guilty Friday afternoon to raping 1 boy, and sexually molesting 3 more. All the boys are under the age of 14.
Under a plea deal, he'll spend the next 6 to 12 years in state prison. The District Attorney's office says the plea spares the victims from testifying at trial. Schuylkill County Assistant D. A. A. J. Serina says, "Even though you think your son or daughter may be capable of getting through it, nothing's harder than having that witness up on the witness stand and being cross-examined by the defense lawyers. And once that starts, we have no control whatsoever."
All four boys Donati assaulted are from Schuylkill County. Police say Donati was friends with each of the boy's parents. It all happened in early 2007.
Donati could have received a longer sentence had each case gone to trial. But inside the courtroom, the judge asked all parents of the children if they agreed with the sentence, and all said yes. Serina says, "Do I wish that he could of go something greater, sure, but taking into consideration the strength of weaknesses of each case, yeah, it's good that now the boys can now get along with their lives and put this behind them."
Donati allegedly sexually assaulted a 5th boy. That case is expected to wrap up in September, and could give Donati more prison time. | | |
