Scranton Accountant Sentenced for Stealing from Clients

Scranton Accountant Sentenced for Stealing from Clients - Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 6:00PM EST

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- A well-known Scranton accountant, who admitted stealing from his clients, will spend time in prison. Lawyers for the 58-year-old say addictions to drugs and alcohol were behind his crimes.
Carl Quinlan was sentenced to two years on the state's IP Program, then 8 years probation. The IP Program helps drug and alcohol addicts. As part of it he'll spend seven months in prison then another 17 months in a treatment facility like a halfway house.

It’s been just about a year since Carl Quinlan was arrested and charged with theft and forgery. Tuesday the 58-year-old learned that as part of his sentence he'll spend seven months in prison for his crime. His attorney, Bernie Brown, said, “I think it was a good sentence. I think it was in Mr. Quinlan's best interest."

In court Brown explained the accountant stole from seven of his clients to feed his addictions to alcohol, cocaine and opiates. “I think he was in the throws of addiction and I think that motivated him to do these things, because I think without the addiction, he would not have otherwise," said Brown.

None of Quinlan's victims were here in court Tuesday, but we know several of them were Scranton Police officers.

Quinlan's last known office was in the SNB Plaza building on North Washington Avenue. It’s where prosecutors say he changed his client's tax returns in order to pocket their money.

Now he promises to pay it all back. That's at least $40,000. “He has made the necessary restitution up to this point, as much as we can," said Brown.

Quinlan did not apologize in court, but his lawyer says his client is happy to have this case resolved. “His major focus is to become a more productive member of society and to get out and be with his family, so he might move on with his life," said Brown.

The sentencing was done by video conference from SCI Camp Hill, where Quinlan currently is.
