WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- The Scranton Diocese canceled a fund-raiser for the Susan G. Komen Foundation put on by the Holy Redeemer girls basketball team. The diocese says it supports breast cancer awareness programs but it cannot support any group, it says, opposes the teachings of the catholic church.
The Holy Redeemer girls basketball team raised thousands of dollars for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. They sold t-shirts and other items. They were going to have a "pink-out" at the girls game against Pittston Area Thursday night but the event was canceled.
A spokesman for the Scranton Diocese said the diocese cannot support the Susan G. Komen Foundation because it supports Planned Parenthood. The group supports abortions and embryonic stem cell research which is against the teaching of the church. Also, the principal did not first approve the fund-raiser, which is the policy of the Scranton Diocese.
A spokesperson for the local chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation said she is disppointed and insists that none of the money rasied locally goes to any local Planned Parenthood agency. | |
