SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY -- As the Eyewitness News I-Team was first to tell you late Saturday afternoon, Diocese of Scranton School Superintendent Joseph Casciano has been fired.
The Lackawanna County District Attorney's office acknowledged in January it was investigating sexual abuse allegations against Casciano from years earlier.
Casciano took a leave of absence in late 2009 from the job he took over in 2005. The D. A.'s office has been looking for possible victims still within the statute of limitations.
A spokesperson for the Diocese of Scranton sent Eyewitness News the following statement Saturday evening:
"The Diocese of Scranton can confirm that Joseph G. Casciano is no longer employed by the Diocese, effective April 8. He was informed of his termination in a letter from Cardinal Justin Rigali, Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese. Mr. Casciano had requested and was granted a leave of absence that had been in effect since Dec. 28, 2009. This is a personnel matter, and there will be no further comment from the Diocese."
