Scranton Fire Destroys Home, Damages Another

Scranton Fire Destroys Home, Damages Another - Saturday, February 21, 2009 at 10:15PM EST

SOUTH SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Smoke filled the 400-block of Cherry Street in South Scranton Saturday night. Flames destroyed one home before spreading to another, leaving 11 people homeless. No one was seriously hurt, but several pets are missing and feared dead.
“When the firemen arrived on scene, there were flames coming out of the ceilings and the roof, both floors. The fire had a great start," said Scranton Fire Chief Tom Davis.

Five people, two adults and three kids, lived in the first building the one that was destroyed. Jim Lee, the owner of The Slice restaurant says one of the fire victims worked for him. He made sure everyone got out okay. “You feel hopeless and helpless. There were flames shooting out of everywhere. You couldn't get near the house. It’s just tragic," he told Eyewitness News.

With many streets blocked people watched in awe as fire crews contained the flames. The Red Cross was also on hand. “We're here to provide the family with immediate needs of shelter, food, clothing and comfort. A helping hand, a shoulder to lean on," said Brian Wrightson.

One person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. And for the people left homeless it’s going to be a long road ahead. “It hits hard when it’s close to home. It really does," Jim added.

The cause of the fire in Scranton is still under investigation.
